Early Years Foundation Stage at Mount Pellon.
What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is how the Government and early years professionals describe the time in your child's life between birth and age 5. Nurseries, pre-schools, reception classes and childminders registered to deliver the EYFS must follow a legal document called the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.
Children can attend our nursery after their 3rd birthday, we currently offer morning and afternoon spaces. Our nursery is staffed with 1 class teacher, 2 nursery nurses and a teaching assistant. We plan using the development matters framework which is non-statutory guidance, which supports all those working in early childhood education settings to implement the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the EYFS.
Children enter the Reception in class in the September after their 4th birthday. This is full time school. Our Reception classes comprise of 2 class teachers and 3 teaching assistants. Children have access to 2 indoor classrooms and 1 outdoor classroom. Throughout the foundation stage, during the reception year, children are assessed informally using the early years foundation stage profile. This is a list of competencies against which all five year olds are assessed. At the end of reception children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals and the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
The EYFS Profile summarises and describes children's attainment at the end of the EYFS. It is based on ongoing observation and assessment in the three prime and four specific areas of learning, and the three characteristics of effective learning, set out below:
The prime areas of learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
The specific areas of learning:
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Characteristics of effective learning:
- Playing and exploring
- Active learning
- Creating and thinking critically
