Early Years Foundation Stage

The overall aims of the EYFS at Mount Pellon is to help young children achieve the five ?Every Child Matters? outcomes of staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and eventually achieving economic wellbeing.

The EYFS principles which guide our planning are grouped into four distinct but complementary themes:

???????? A Unique Child - every child is a competent learner.

???????? Positive Relationships - children learn to be strong and independent.

???????? Enabling Environments - supporting and extending a child?s development.

???????? Learning and Development - ?grouped into 3 prime and 4 specific areas of learning

The three prime areas of learning and development are:

???????? Communication and Language

???????? Personal, social and emotional development

???????? Physical development

Children cannot master the skills within the following specific areas without developing the prime areas.

The four specific areas

???????? Literacy

???????? Mathematics

???????? Understanding the World

???????? Expressive Arts and Design

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. ?Our aim is that when children leave Mount Pellon?s EYFS they are independent, confident and curious.? We want children to develop a ?can do? attitude, to ?have a go? and to learn from their mistakes. ?We provide children with learning and development opportunities which are?planned around the needs and interests of each individual child which?are assessed and?reviewed regularly.?

At the end of the EYFS a statutory assessment, the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, is completed. The assessment is carried out by the EYFS Reception staff and is based on what has been observed in school and at home by parents /carers throughout the year.
