Maths in Nursery

How is maths learnt?

In Nursery, maths skills are learnt through everyday experience. Children are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills in independent activities in areas of provision, including the outdoor classroom. As well as through continuous provision, maths skills are taught through small group sessions.

When is maths learnt?

  • Daily maths-based activities in areas of provision including outdoor
  • Early morning tasks linked to maths
  • Whole group and small group maths teaching
  • Trips and visitors

Maths focus for teaching and provision:

  • counting, ordering amounts to 5, then 10
  • following instructions
  • positional language
  • building patterns
  • exploring shapes and how they fit together
  • measuring (including capacity)
  • sequencing events
  • counting, ordering, writing numbers to 10, then 20
  • recording maths
  • recognising amounts by sight
